Founded in 1999 in Craiova, Romania, with the primary goal of modernizing locomotives, Softronic proudly continues the city’s over 50-year tradition of constructing electric locomotives. Through innovation and expertise, the company keeps this spirit of excellence alive in the railway industry, adapting to the technological demands of the present and preparing for the challenges of the future.

Softrans was founded in 2002 to develop and test innovative technical solutions for Softronic’s products. This company was designed as a strategic partner in the process of continuous research and improvement, playing a key role in evaluating and validating the performance of advanced technologies created by Softronic.

Just one year after its founding, the first Softrans locomotives began operating in freight transport, showcasing their remarkable performance. These locomotives provided a high-quality and reliable service, attracting an increasing number of customers from various sectors.

In 2008, Softronic Craiova marked a significant moment in the company’s history with the launch of the “PHOENIX,” the first new electric locomotive built by our team. The “PHOENIX” not only demonstrated Softronic’s technical capabilities but also strengthened the company’s position as a top player in the electric locomotive manufacturing industry, marking an important step in its evolution.

In 2010, Softronic made a remarkable innovation in the railway industry with the creation of the first electric locomotive in Romania equipped with asynchronous traction motors: TRANSMONTANA. This locomotive represents a significant milestone in the technological evolution of the company and the domestic railway industry, serving as a symbol of Softronic’s expertise and commitment to innovative, high-performance solutions. TRANSMONTANA was designed to meet the most demanding efficiency and reliability requirements, marking a major step in the technological development of railway transport in Romania and the entire region.

In 2013, Softronic successfully completed a remarkable project, the RES electric locomotive with a low floor and bi-system, an innovative model that sets new standards in railway transport. This advanced locomotive is capable of operating at both 25 kV AC 50 Hz and 3 kV DC, demonstrating remarkable flexibility in functioning on various types of railway infrastructure.

Softronic achieved a new important milestone with the construction of the 14th TRANSMONTANA locomotive, a special model that marks a first in the Transmontana series: it is the first bi-system locomotive in this range. This expands the versatility and already remarkable performance of the TRANSMONTANA locomotive, making it capable of operating efficiently both under 25 kV AC 50 Hz and 3 kV DC.

In 2014, Softronic launched the TM017 – version 2.0, a completely reinvented model that brings with it a modernized design and significantly improved technical features. This new version represents a significant leap in performance and efficiency, combining innovative aesthetics with cutting-edge technologies.

The first locomotives destined for Green Cargo (models 32 and 33) have entered the final testing phase, preparing for delivery to Sweden. This generation of locomotives represents a significant leap in performance and adaptability, being redesigned to withstand extreme temperature conditions, down to -40°C. Additionally, the new locomotives are equipped with a robust coupling system capable of supporting an impressive force of 1500 kN, ensuring increased safety and reliability even in the most challenging operating conditions.

In October 2020, Softronic and Green Cargo signed a significant framework agreement, which includes the delivery of 100 innovative locomotives by 2030. Through this agreement, Softronic commits to provide high-performance locomotives, tailored to meet the most demanding technological and environmental standards.
