We are proud to contribute to the modernization of Romania’s railway transport through dedicated projects for CFR Călători, our long-term partner. As part of a project financed by PNRR, we have committed to transforming existing locomotives into modern solutions, adapted to the current needs of public passenger transport.
From Past to Present: Locomotive Modernization
In February 2024, the EA 229 locomotive, once a symbol of Brașov Depot, embarked on a remarkable journey of modernization. Originally built in 1975 at Electroputere Craiova, it had been retired from service.
Today, we have successfully transformed it into a high-performance locomotive, fully adapted to the demands of modern railway transport.
Initial stage of the locomotive
The locomotives we modernize for CFR Călători were originally developed with classic DC electric motors, which supported railway transport for decades. While robust and efficient for their time, they required a major upgrade to meet today’s technological and environmental standards.
A Comprehensive Modernization Process
– The DC motors were replaced with high-performance asynchronous motors, providing higher energy efficiency and requiring less maintenance.
– The old control systems were eliminated in favor of advanced digital systems, improving reliability and operational precision.

Modern Equipment for Safety and Performance
Today, our locomotives for CFR Călători are equipped with the ETCS (European Train Control System), a European standard ensuring railway safety. This allows the locomotives to operate seamlessly across different European rail networks, contributing to Romania’s integration into the international railway transport system.
Additionally, the locomotives feature:
– Modern traction control units, ensuring smooth and optimized acceleration.
– Advanced inverters, which efficiently convert electrical energy.
– Regenerative braking systems, reducing energy consumption and supporting sustainable transport.
Official Certification and Excellence Standards
The modernized locomotive has undergone rigorous testing and has received certification from ONFR-AFER, a notified body ensuring compliance with all national and European technical and safety regulations.
Impact on Romania’s Railway Network
With a power output of 5100 kW and increased efficiency, the new locomotive is perfectly adapted to modern railway transport. By integrating asynchronous motors and digital systems, we have significantly reduced operational costs and extended equipment lifespan.
